岡山市（おかやまし）は、中国地方の南東部、岡山県の南東部に位置する政令指定都市で、同県の県庁所在地である。全国的には桃太郎の伝説と吉備団子や西大寺会陽（裸祭り）、温暖な瀬戸内の気候により育まれたマスカット・オブ・アレキサンドリアや白桃など高級フルーツの産地として有名な都市である。中心部には岡山城や日本三名園の一つである後楽園を擁している。岡山藩池田氏の城下町として栄えた江戸時代以来、地域中心都市として発展してきた高層ビルの立ち並ぶ中心部と、閑静な田園や中山間地域が広がる郊外部を持っている。また古くから学都としての趣を持ち、明治期から戦前の昭和期にかけて旧制第六高等学校（中国四国地方唯一のナンバースクール）、旧制岡山医科大学（中国四国地方で設置された初めての大学）、旧制岡山農業専門学校、旧制岡山農業研究所、旧制岡山師範学校、旧制清心女子専門学校などが開校された。現在でも市街地中心部に数多くの大学や専門学校が存在し、学都としての性格をより一層強めている。広大な平野を背景に中四国のクロスポイントとして、1980年代以降の瀬戸大橋の開通、JR線の四国との直通化、山陽自動車道の開通に伴い交通インフラが急速に整備され、岡山都市圏は周辺都市圏と共に東瀬戸経済圏として成長してきた。2005年以降、周辺4町と合併したこともあり、人口は70万人を突破した。2009年4月1日には政令指定都市に移行し、北・中・東・南の4行政区が設置された。
